Malaysia joined the Madrid System as its 106th member on 27th September 2019, when the Government of Malaysia deposited its instrument of accession to the Madrid Protocol with the Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). The Madrid Protocol will come into force in Malaysia on 27th December 2019, if the new Trademarks Act 2019 has become law in Malaysia by 27th December 2019 at the latest.
The Madrid System is a convenient system for registering and managing trademarks worldwide. The consequence of joining it is that owners of Malaysian trademarks, by filing just one application in Malaysia, will be able to protect and promote their trademarks in all 122 member countries of the Madrid System, after they have registered their trademarks in Malaysia. For more information, please click here.
